The Saw series, with its unique horror aesthetics and complex moral dilemmas, has become one of the most influential horror film series in the 21st century. Through the deadly games designed by Jigsaw and his followers, this series delves into the survival instinct, moral choices, and the dark side of human nature, providing deeper thinking beyond the bloody scenes.
Saw (2004)

James Wan’s low-budget film revolutionized the horror genre. Two men are trapped in a dirty bathroom and must make a series of brutal choices to survive. Jigsaw’s appearance and the final twist create one of the most shocking endings in horror movie history. The film cost $800,000 and grossed over $100 million worldwide.
”Saw 2″ (2005)
Following the plot of the first film, Detective Eric Matthews led a team to raid Jigsaw’s hideout, but unexpectedly found himself and eight suspects trapped in an abandoned building full of deadly traps. This episode further expands the worldview of Jigsaw and deepens the theme of “redemption through pain” through the past crimes of the game participants (such as violent criminals and drug addicts).
At the end, Matthews chose to stay in the building to save his son, while Amanda took Daniel away, suggesting that the influence of the “Jigsaw” organization is expanding, and making the audience curious about the subsequent development of the series.
”Saw 3″ (2006)
The story focuses on the countdown of the life of “Jigsaw” John himself. At this time, John is already terminally ill, and he hired Amanda as an assistant to design a new death game together.
This episode explores the theme of “forgiveness” and “revenge” from Jeff’s perspective. Jeff’s painful choices in the game, combined with the complex master-disciple relationship between John and Amanda (Amanda gradually deviates from John’s original intention due to her paranoid execution of the game rules), make the plot full of tension. At the end, John died due to worsening of his illness, but Amanda killed Jeff’s wife to protect the “Jigsaw” concept, causing Jeff to shoot Amanda to death, resulting in a tragic tragedy and announcing the loss of control of the “Jigsaw” spiritual legacy, laying a hidden danger for the subsequent multi-line narrative of the series.
”Saw X” (2023)

Saw X, which returns after a lapse of ten years, is set between Saw 1 and Saw 2. It tells the story of John Kramer, who, after being diagnosed with terminal cancer, goes to Mexico to receive a fake “miracle cure”, only to find that he has been deceived. Angry John begins to design a cruel death game against this group of scammers, while introducing a new character, Selina, who, as John’s “temporary ally”, gradually understands and agrees with John’s ideas in the game.
This episode fills the gap in the series’ plot by looking back at John’s early criminal motives, showing his transformation from a desperate patient to a “moral judge”. The game design returns to the “precision mechanical trap” style of the early series, such as the rotating blade maze, acid and alkali corrosion chamber, etc., full of retro horror. At the end, John not only successfully avenges, but also brings Selina into the “Jigsaw” camp, suggesting the further spread of his criminal philosophy, while leaving room for the development of the plot after the series is restarted.
